Sparks
With their move from the USA to the United Kingdom in the early 1970s, brothers Ron and Russell Mael quickly became part of the British glam scene. As early as 1972, they released “A Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing”, an album with a distinctive style that anticipated their later role as influential boundary-crossers between rock, pop and electronic music.
Sparks – Sound & Production Style
The style of Sparks is characterised by distinctive vocals, ironically pointed lyrics, and a shift between rocky guitars and synthesiser arrangements. The early productions, including “A Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing”, were still recorded with a classic rock setup, while later singles such as “Modesty Plays” increasingly relied on electronic elements and programmed rhythms. Over the decades, the band worked with producers such as Tony Visconti and Giorgio Moroder, which is reflected in the complexity of their arrangements.
Sparks on vinyl – the key releases
The single Girl from Germany (7'' Vinyl) marks one of the band's early steps into the European music scene, while Modesty Plays (7'' Vinyl) documents the transition to the electronic-influenced sound of the 1980s. The album A Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing (Vinyl LP) is exemplary of Sparks' experimental phase at the start of their career.
Those interested in experimental sounds between glam, artpop and electronics will find key Sparks releases here for their own collection.
