Rick Astley
With the number one hit "Never Gonna Give You Up" from 1987, Rick Astley achieved international breakthrough and shaped the image of British pop in the late 1980s. The artist worked closely with the production team Stock Aitken Waterman, who at the time also worked with acts such as Kylie Minogue and Bananarama. Astley’s distinctive voice has remained a hallmark of catchy dance-pop productions over the decades.
Rick Astley – Style & Genre Classification
At the centre is a mix of dance-pop, synth-pop and soul influences, comparable to artists such as Jason Donovan or Paul Young, but with a stronger focus on danceable arrangements and electronic production. The typical features are catchy choruses, prominent drum machines, digital synthesisers and a clear, deep-timbred singing voice. Especially during the peak period between 1987 and 1991, the sound was significantly shaped by the PWL studio.
Rick Astley on vinyl – the key releases
The maxi single Never Gonna Give You Up (12'' Vinyl Maxi) documents the characteristic PWL dance-pop sound. With My Arms Keep Missing You (Bruno's Mix) (12'' Vinyl Maxi) there is another example of the club-oriented remixes of the time. The US pressing Ain't too proud to beg US 7" Single PWL (7'' Vinyl) shows Astley’s repertoire beyond the European charts.
