Electric Light Orchestra
By combining a rock band line-up with orchestral string arrangements, this British project set a distinctive mark in the field of symphonic pop music from the early 1970s onwards. Jeff Lynne, as the driving force behind the group, developed a production style that blends electronic elements with classical instrumentation. The releases were often characterised by lavish arrangements and multi-part vocals.
Electric Light Orchestra – Sound & Production Style
Strings, synthesisers and electric guitars are at the heart of the sound, with Jeff Lynne as producer and songwriter shaping the characteristic mix of pop, rock and orchestral passages. Drums and bass are usually clearly placed in the mix, while violins and cellos provide melodic transitions. Many albums were released on the Jet Records label, which contributed to the typical ELO sound.
