      Description

In the winter of 1984, “Last Christmas” spent five weeks at number two in the UK, held off by Band Aid – a charity single George Michael sang on himself. The song only reached the top on 1 January 2021, 36 years after its release, later than any single before it. This white seven-inch came out a year earlier – and has never left its shrink-wrap.

George Michael recorded the song alone at Advision Studios in London in August 1984, playing every part himself on drum machine, Juno synthesiser and sleigh bells. Wham! donated the 1984 royalties to Ethiopian famine relief, the same cause as Band Aid. On 13 December 2019 the single returned as a limited white reissue, with the remix edit of “Everything She Wants” on the flip – the song that went to number one in the US in 1985. In 2019, “Last Christmas” was also the UK’s best-selling vinyl single.

Everybody knows the song – we suspect this edition speaks mainly to Wham! and George Michael collectors who want coloured vinyl unopened. For us, its charm is that it dates from the time when “Last Christmas” was still Britain’s best-selling single never to reach number one.

This copy is new and unplayed, record and sleeve still in the original shrink-wrap. The red sticker on the front reads “Limited Edition White Vinyl”.
