Description

What does a German Eurovision song sound like once it has been dressed up for American radio? This Liberty single out of Los Angeles has the answer: Katja Ebstein sings her “Wunder gibt es immer wieder” in English. On this small disc two schools of pop craft meet – Christian Bruhn’s German one and the British one of “Delilah” lyricist Barry Mason.

The English words came from Barry Mason, who had written “Delilah” with Les Reed for Tom Jones, and from Sylvan Whittingham, daughter of “Thunderball” screenwriter Jack Whittingham. She later went to court claiming half of the “Delilah” lyric; the case was settled in 1986. The music stayed in Bruhn’s hands: he composed, arranged, conducted and co-produced – just as he led the orchestra himself in Amsterdam in 1970, when the song finished third. In 1972 he married his singer.

Ebstein returned in 1971 and 1980, placing third and second – three top-three finishes without ever winning, something no one had managed before her. We like how this promo brings both crafts together on one label; we suspect Eurovision collectors and followers of Bruhn or Mason will be looking for it.

The label carries the legend “Promotion Copy – Not For Sale”. Record and original Liberty company sleeve are each graded vg+; the sleeve still has a “Record Center” price sticker for 98 cents.
