John Travolta - Staying alive LaserDisc Germany

In depth We took particular care over this item.

Description

It is the size of an LP and shimmers in every colour of the rainbow, yet put it on and you don’t just hear the Bee Gees – you watch John Travolta dance. This LaserDisc carries the sequel to “Saturday Night Fever” in a format that never grew beyond an enthusiasts’ niche in Germany.

In 1983 Travolta returned as Tony Manero, this time not to the disco floor but to Broadway. Sylvester Stallone directed, and under his supervision Travolta trained for five months and lost about twenty pounds. Critics tore the film apart, audiences came anyway: it grossed around 127 million dollars worldwide. The Bee Gees wrote five new songs, and Sylvester’s brother Frank Stallone reached number 10 in the US charts with “Far from Over”.

What we enjoy is exactly this collision: a film that a Razzie guide counts among the hundred most enjoyably bad movies, on a disc that looks like a record from the future. Our guess is that LaserDisc collectors, Bee Gees completists and fans of headband-era eighties cinema will be the ones reaching for it.

Disc and sleeve are each graded vg+. This German edition carries the logos of Philips and CIC Video, the company that distributed Paramount and Universal titles outside North America.
