Description

A white label, the same title twice, no singer’s name – just a label name and a phone number. That label leads straight to David Cassidy. Tony Romeo’s “I Think I Love You” was his breakthrough in 1970: with Cassidy singing lead for the Partridge Family, it spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Almost thirty years later he took the song back. Slamajama Records was Cassidy’s own label; in 1998 it released the album “Old Trick New Dog”, with a new recording of the hit and a Groove Mix as a bonus track. This 12-inch promo with a Dub Mix and a Club Mix carries exactly that label name, and that is how we read it: as part of the same reclaiming, a former teen idol who doesn’t just look after his biggest hit, but sends it to the club. Nine years after the album, Partridge classics appeared as club versions, newly sung by Cassidy and remixed by Craig J.

What we like most is the anonymity: it’s easy to picture a DJ putting it on unawares and only realising at the chorus which classic he’s got. Our guess is that it will mostly appeal to Cassidy collectors still missing the bridge between bubblegum and house.
