Description

A bearded Father Christmas, a young woman in a pink satin dress perched barefoot on his knee – and above them, in festive lettering, “Happy Christmas Dancing”. Who came up with that? The answer sits in small print on the label rim: Gruner + Jahr, Hamburg. A magazine publisher packaged Christmas as a dance party.

Maritim was the record label of that publishing world: founded in the late sixties under John Jahr, later with Gruner + Jahr, then chief rival of the audio-drama label Europa. The Orchester Kay Webb was its house orchestra, and its records liked to follow in the wake of successful bandleaders. The model here is most likely James Last: in 1965 his Non Stop Dancing series put the pause-free party on record, and in 1966 he followed with “Christmas Dancing”, which sold over half a million copies in Germany alone.

To my mind this is Maritim’s reply: the title almost the same, the cover more magazine front than candlelight, and that is exactly the charm of this record. The label gathers all the songs under one single name – the non-stop principle sends its regards. It belongs with cheesecake-cover collectors and anyone wanting a Christmas-party record that gets people talking.

A single copy: the disc (vg) has audible surface scratches but plays well; the cover is vg+.

Non Stop Dancing — An instalment of James Last’s ‘Non Stop Dancing’ series, which put the non-stop dance party on record in 1965 – the likely model for Maritim’s Christmas album.
