Description

The kiss came first, the record afterwards. On 28 August 2003 Madonna and Britney Spears kissed as they opened the MTV Video Music Awards. At rehearsals Spears had asked her to sing on her new single – for the first time in her twenty-year career Madonna appeared on a single as a guest. For those who saw the kiss, this record was never made.

It was for the club DJs: “For Promotional Use Only” is printed on both labels and the sticker. Side A carries the remix by Londoner Rishi Rich, fresh from the British charts with Jay Sean – melody gone, clattering beat, Punjabi shouts. Number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 1 in the club chart.

Madonna, of all people, is missing from the writing credits: six names instead of the seven usually listed. T. Nash is Terius Nash, who in 2007, as The-Dream, wrote Rihanna’s “Umbrella” with the same producer. The arranger credit names Steve Lunt, then in A&R at Jive and in 1984 co-writer of Cyndi Lauper’s “She Bop”.

His song was on the PMRC’s list of fifteen, the list that brought the warning label. This one has a sticker too, but it courts DJs instead of warning anyone – which I find delightful. Likely seekers: DJs, promo collectors and Britney and Madonna fans.

Vinyl of the copies on offer ex throughout, laminated sleeve with sticker noted as “vg, corner bumped”.
